It was Pieter Bruegel the Elder who helped usher in the Dutch Golden Age of painting. Bruegel was part of the first generation of artists not to be restricted to painting solely religious subject matter, and the subject matter of his choice has been described as innovative. Known for his painting and printmaking, Bruegel is considered by scholars to be the most prominent figure of the Flemish and Dutch Renaissance. If you haven't, just know that places like this really exist in the world. If you have been to Ke'e, you know what I'm talking about. To step out of the darkness of the jungle, and into the light of this sacred and idyllic scene. Color does this to me, it wakes me up, makes me feel alive! I want the viewer to feel this way. The combination of cool turquoises, sunburst oranges, fuchsia flowers, vibrant greens, and strokes of electric blues in the shadows excite my eyes, and leave me feeling uplifted. It's not just the scenery in the painting, with its dense jungle, aqua-colored waters, and golden sand beach, that really draws me into the painting, but more importantly for me, it is the color palette used. All of the visions in my head for this painting just couldn't quite communicate what makes this place so remarkable. I have been meaning to paint this particular scene of Ke'e beach at the end of the road, just at the foot of the Na Pali coast, on the island of Kauai, for sometime now.
